Kisi ko de ke dil koi nawasanj-e-fughan kyun ho

    Mirza Ghalib

To give your heart and only sing in pain, tell me why? If heart has left the chest, should tongue remain, tell me why?

If she won't change her ways, should I my own refrain? Why lose my pride to ask of her cold disdain, tell me why?

My confidant exposed my grief, my love's in pain; Why trust a soul who finds my sorrow all in vain, tell me why?

If love means madness, breaking my own head in pain, Then, stony heart, why just your threshold's cold domain, tell me why?

Friend, in my cage, don't fear to speak of sun and rain; Why think the nest the lightning struck was mine again, tell me why?

You say I'm not in your heart, but this you must explain: If you're the only one in mine, why hidden must you remain, tell me why?

To blame the heart's attraction is a charge in vain; If you did not pull back, would this pulling strain remain, tell me why?

Is your affection not enough to cause a man great pain? For one you choose as friend, why must the sky with malice rain, tell me why?

If this is just a test, then what is true disdain? You've sided with my foe, so is my trial not in vain, tell me why?

You ask why meeting rivals should bring you any stain; You're right, of course you're right... so say "Yes, why?" again, tell me why.

What can your taunts achieve, O Ghalib, what's your gain? By calling her so heartless, will she shed her cold disdain, tell me why?
