Ki wafa hum se to ghair uss ko jafa kehte hain

    Mirza Ghalib

To show my faith is tyranny's display; The good are called the bad in this strange way, is what they say.

I go to tell my heart's complete dismay, But who can know what she will choose to say, is what they say.

Don't chide the men of some forgotten day Who claim that wine and song can grief allay, is what they say.

A moment's peace from fainting comes my way; But then what cry can its true pain convey, is what they say.

The God I seek is past what eyes survey; The wise see but a signpost when they pray, is what they say.

Since your kind mercy came to light my way, Each thorn is now a sun's life-giving ray, is what they say.

A spark's inside my heart, why feel dismay? We seek the fire fanned to fullest sway, is what they say.

Let's see what comes of her proud, playful way; For every word she speaks, a prayer I say, is what they say.

Let fellow poets write his funeral lay; For Ghalib of the scattered song is dead today, is what they say.
