Chapter 75

Vishnu Smriti 75

He who performs a śrāddha (श्राद्ध) while his father is alive shall perform it for those for whom his father would perform it. // Vi_75.1 //

While his father and paternal grandfather are alive, for those for whom his paternal grandfather would. // Vi_75.2 //

While his father, paternal grandfather, and paternal great-grandfather are alive, he shall not perform it at all. // Vi_75.3 //

He whose father is deceased shall place a piṇḍa (पिण्ड) for his father and give to the two beyond his paternal grandfather. // Vi_75.4 //

He whose father and paternal grandfather are deceased shall give piṇḍas (पिण्डs) to them and to the father of his paternal grandfather. // Vi_75.5 //

He whose paternal grandfather is deceased shall place a piṇḍa (पिण्ड) for him and give to the two beyond his paternal great-grandfather. // Vi_75.6 //

A wise man should perform the śrāddha (श्राद्ध) for his maternal grandfathers in the same way, / With adaptation of the mantras according to rule; for the rest, it is without mantras. || Vi_75.7 ||
