    Mirza Ghalib

My jealousy insists her bond with him is ill-fated; My reason asks, “That heartless one, with whom is she acquainted?”

Each atom is a cup from this tavern of illusion’s art; The madman’s dance, with Laila’s winking glance, is well acquainted.

Desire itself adorns the pride of those the world negated; The dust mote with the desert, the drop with the sea’s acquainted.

And I possess this wild heart, a shard of disaster fated, An enemy of safety, with wandering it’s acquainted.

Let’s not complain of jealousies that keep us separated; My lap is my companion, your mirror is your acquainted.

Asad, the carver shaped one love, a likeness he created; By striking stone on stone, no true friend is made acquainted.

Through self-regard, we stayed as two who were not yet acquainted; My solitude my partner, your mirror is with you acquainted.

Your warmth just sets my fevered mind to a state more agitated; Else who am I, O brand of want, to be with you acquainted?

The mirror’s soul is but the secret that an eyelash intimated; One who knows will grasp the silent sign of the acquainted.

The parts of spring are by a single thread of chaos integrated; The green estranged, the breeze adrift, the rose is unacquainted.

My weary mind no longer speaks of jealousies debated; Your cup of wine, and this my yawn, are intimately acquainted.
