A Tazmeen on a Couplet by Aneesi Shamlu

Like the wandering morning breeze, I live my days, For in love, wayfaring is sweeter than the journey's end. My restless heart at last has reached the land of Pir Sanjar, Where a remedy is granted for the spirit's restless ache. The word of longing was a stranger to my lips, My tongue about to be indebted to the power of speech, When from the tomb a voice arose: “Our grievance is with you, O deserter of the ancestral way! O Qais, how has the inner fire within you grown so cold, When Laila still possesses all her legendary grace of old? The seed of 'La Ilaha' never sprouted from your saline soil; The barrenness of your nature is a shame for all the world to see. Do you know, O heedless one, what your life has become? A builder of foreign temples, filled with the hymns of the church. You were nurtured in the very arms of the House of God, Yet your frenzied heart is a devotee of the idol-house.

You learned devotion from us, to serve another's art; You stole a pearl from our hands, to grace another's heart.
