Ancient Viṣṇu SanskritVishnu Smriti 36
The killing of a Kṣatriya or a Vaiśya engaged in a sacrifice, of a menstruating woman, of a pregnant woman, of a woman of an unknown clan, of an unknown embryo, and of one who has sought refuge, is equivalent to killing a Brāhmaṇa. // Vi_36.1 //
Giving false witness and killing a friend are equivalent to drinking liquor. // Vi_36.2 //
Stealing a Brāhmaṇa's land and stealing a deposit are equivalent to stealing gold. // Vi_36.3 //
Having intercourse with the wife of a paternal uncle, maternal grandfather, maternal uncle, father-in-law, or king is equivalent to violating a preceptor's bed. // Vi_36.4 //
And intercourse with a father's sister, mother's sister, or one's own sister. // Vi_36.5 //
And intercourse with the wife of a Vedic scholar, a priest, a paid teacher, or a friend. // Vi_36.6 //
And with a sister's friend, a woman of the same lineage, a woman of a higher varṇa, a maiden, a woman of the lowest caste, a menstruating woman, one who has sought refuge, a female ascetic, and one entrusted to one's care.[^7] // Vi_36.7 //
These are sinners equivalent to great sinners (anupātaka), just like great sinners; / They are purified by a horse-sacrifice or by visiting sacred bathing places. || Vi_36.8 ||
