Kal gaye the tum jise bimaar-e-hijraan chhod kar

    Sheikh Ibrahim Zauq

The one you saw, by separation slain, left behind, Has quit this life, all worldly, fleeting gain, left behind.

A child-like tear, from eyelash-fringe, like rain, left behind, Was lost inside grief’s collar-rending lane, left behind.

How can your arrow leave this heart, its chain left behind? The soul-bird cannot fly, its shell in vain left behind.

One who has known love’s sword-wound will not feign, left behind, A need for balm, with salt to cause more pain, left behind.

How can you free this captured heart, its chain left behind, Unless you show the fish in hands that stain, left behind?

Your coldness chills my soul; I feel it wane, left behind. Begone, O sun! I want the strolling rain-cloud left behind.

Your scattered locks, which drove my heart insane, left behind, Now hunt my very life, a tangled skein, left behind.

O heart, now exit with his arrow’s bane, left behind, Or you’ll regret this foolish choice, you swain, left behind.

Why shouldn't deer flee from your wild domain, left behind, When lions from my wails flee jungle plain, left behind?

If that ascetic saw your lips' red stain, left behind, He’d rise and let his coral beads fall, slain, left behind.

A whirlwind scout now rides across the plain, left behind, My soul prepares to leave this shell of pain, left behind.

If God gave true contentment, who would strain, left behind, To chase the whole, with half already ta'en, left behind?

This cup of heart I offer, passed in train, left behind, Don’t lose this chance, this circulating chain, left behind.

O cloud of grace, this task is yours to deign, left behind, For who else could wash clean my garment’s stain, left behind?

Recite a fiery ghazal, Zauq, don't refrain, left behind, The fire-souled lover’s style, don't let it wane, left behind.
