    Safaa-e-hairat-e-aaina hai saamaan-e-zang aakhir

    Mirza Ghalib

A mirror's flawless wonder finds a stain at last, And standing water feels corruption's rain at last.

No cure for anguish came from wealth's domain, at last; The emerald cup became a source of pain, at last.

The new-grown down upon that cheek, so plain, at last, The mirror held it like a protective chain, at last.

Stay empty like the crescent, free from gain, at last; The full moon, hoarding light, began to wane, at last.

The frantic, struggling bird is caught and slain, at last; The arrow's eye now weeps a wound of rain, at last.

The tavern's fall by drunken friends was pre-ordained, at last; And sprinkled drops of wine became a stony rain, at last.

Asad, though veiled, love's longing keeps its own refrain, at last; The bent and broken harp is not without its strain, at last.
