20th Century Allama Iqbal UrduWhy in my moonlight do you wander, restless and astray? Silent as a flower, like a fragrance scattered on its way.
Perhaps you are the jeweler of the pearls that are the night, Or a fish that swims within my flowing river of the light.
Or are you a fallen star, from my own brow cast down, Who left the heights of glory to reside within this town?
The very lute of being has its music put to rest, My mirror holds the sleeping dream of life within its breast.
The whirlpool's eye has closed within the river's deepest part, The restless wave against the shore has stilled its beating heart.
This earthly town, once so alive and full of clamorous strife, Now sleeps as if it never held a single breathing life.
And yet the Poet's heart, a stranger still to peace, How have you stayed so free of my spell's release?
