When a householder sees wrinkles and grey hair, he should take refuge in the forest. // Vi_94.1 // Or when he sees the child of his child. // Vi_94.2 // Having entrusted his wife to his sons, or being accompanied by her. // Vi_94.3 // There, too, he shall tend the sacred fires. // Vi_94.4 // With what is grown on unploughed land, he shall not neglect the five great sacrifices. // Vi_94.5 // And he shall not abandon his personal Vedic study. // Vi_94.6 // He shall observe celibacy. // Vi_94.7 // He shall wear animal skin or a garment of bark. // Vi_94.8 // And he shall wear matted hair, a beard, body hair, and nails. // Vi_94.9 // He shall be one who bathes at the three junctures of the day. // Vi_94.10 // He may live by gleaning like a pigeon, or collect provisions for a month, or for a year. // Vi_94.11 // One who collects for a year shall abandon what was previously collected in the month of Āśvayuja. // Vi_94.12 //
Having brought it from the village, he shall eat eight mouthfuls while living in the forest, / From a cup made of a Palāśa leaf, from his hand, or from a potsherd. || Vi_94.13 ||
