Chapter 79
Ancient Viṣṇu SanskritVishnu Smriti 79
Now, one shall not perform a śrāddha (श्राद्ध) with water collected at night. // Vi_79.1 //
In the absence of kuśa (कुश) grass, in place of kuśa (कुश), one may give kāśa (काश) grass or dūrvā (दूर्वा) grass. // Vi_79.2 //
For a garment, cotton thread. // Vi_79.3 //
He shall discard the fringe, even if it is from an unworn garment. // Vi_79.4 //
And flowers with a strong smell, those without a smell, and those from thorny plants. // Vi_79.5 //
He may give white and fragrant flowers, even from thorny plants, and those that grow in water, even if they are red. // Vi_79.6 //
He shall not give animal fat or marrow for a lamp. // Vi_79.7 //
He shall give clarified butter or oil. // Vi_79.8 //
He shall not give anything produced from a living creature for incense. // Vi_79.9 //
He shall give guggulu (गुग्गुलु) resin mixed with honey and clarified butter. // Vi_79.10 //
Sandalwood, saffron, camphor, agarwood, and padmaka wood for anointing. // Vi_79.11 //
He shall not give salt directly. // Vi_79.12 //
Nor clarified butter, side-dishes, and the like with his hand. // Vi_79.13 //
He shall give vessels of metal. // Vi_79.14 //
Especially those of silver. // Vi_79.15 //
And he shall place a rhinoceros horn, a blanket of rhinoceros hide, a black antelope skin, sesame seeds, white mustard seeds, and unhusked rice, which are purifying and demon-repelling. // Vi_79.16 //
He shall avoid long pepper, mukundaka (मुकुन्दक), bhūstṛṇa (भूस्तृण) grass, horseradish-tree, mustard, sweet basil, sarjaka (सर्जक), suvarcalā (सुवर्चला), gourds, bottle-gourds, eggplants, pālakī (पालकी), upodakī (उपोदकी), taṇḍulīyaka (तण्डुलीयक), safflower, piṇḍāluka (पिण्डालुक), and the milk of a she-buffalo. // Vi_79.17 //
And black gram, lentils, stale food, and artificial salt. // Vi_79.18 //
He shall avoid anger. // Vi_79.19 //
He shall not shed tears. // Vi_79.20 //
He shall not act with haste. // Vi_79.21 //
For giving clarified butter and other things, vessels of metal, vessels of rhinoceros horn, and vessels of inferior wood are praised. // Vi_79.22 //
And on this subject, there is a verse. // Vi_79.23 //
What is given from a vessel of gold or silver, or of rhinoceros horn or Udumbara wood, / And also from a vessel of inferior wood, attains imperishability. || Vi_79.24 ||
