    Vishnu Smriti 61

    Now, he shall not chew a tooth-twig of Palāśa wood. // Vi_61.1 //

    Nor one of Śleṣmātaka, Ariṣṭa, Vibhītaka, Dhava, or Dhanvana wood. // Vi_61.2 //

    And not one of Bandhūka, Nirguṇḍī, Śigru, Tilva, or Tinduka wood. // Vi_61.3 //

    And not one of Kovidāra, Śamī, Pīlu, Pippala, Iṅguda, or Guggulu wood. // Vi_61.4 //

    Not one of Pāribhadra, Āmlikā, Mocaka, Śālmalī, or Śaṇa wood. // Vi_61.5 //

    Not a sweet one. // Vi_61.6 //

    Not a sour one. // Vi_61.7 //

    Not one that is dry at the top. // Vi_61.8 //

    Not a hollow one. // Vi_61.9 //

    Not one with a foul smell. // Vi_61.10 //

    Not a slimy one. // Vi_61.11 //

    Not facing south or west. // Vi_61.12 //

    He shall chew it facing north or east. // Vi_61.13 //

    One from among the Vaṭa, Āsana, Arka, Khadira, Karañja, Badara, Sarja, Nimba, Arimeda, Apāmārga, Mālatī, Kakubha, or Bilva trees. // Vi_61.14 //

    And it shall be astringent, bitter, or pungent. // Vi_61.15 //

    As thick as the tip of the little finger, with a brush-like end, twelve finger-breadths long, / Having risen in the morning and being restrained in speech, he shall chew the tooth-twig. || Vi_61.16 ||

    Having rinsed it and broken it, he shall carefully throw it away in a clean place; / On the new moon day, one shall never chew a tooth-stick. || Vi_61.17 ||
