Chapter 60

Vishnu Smriti 60

At the hour of Brahma, he shall rise and perform the evacuation of urine and feces. // Vi_60.1 //

Facing south at night, and facing north during the day and at the two twilights. // Vi_60.2 //

He shall not do so on uncovered ground. // Vi_60.3 //

Nor on ground turned up by a ploughshare. // Vi_60.4 //

Nor in a shadow. // Vi_60.5 //

Nor on saline soil. // Vi_60.6 //

Nor on a green lawn. // Vi_60.7 //

Nor where there are living creatures. // Vi_60.8 //

Nor in a hole. // Vi_60.9 //

Nor on an anthill. // Vi_60.10 //

Nor on a path. // Vi_60.11 //

Nor on a public road. // Vi_60.12 //

Nor on the impure leavings of another. // Vi_60.13 //

Not near a garden or water. // Vi_60.15 //

Not on ashes. // Vi_60.16 //

Not on embers. // Vi_60.17 //

Not on cow-dung. // Vi_60.18 //

Not in a cow-pen. // Vi_60.19 //

Not in the open air. // Vi_60.20 //

Not in water. // Vi_60.21 //

Not facing the wind, fire, moon, sun, a woman, a preceptor, or a Brāhmaṇa. // Vi_60.22 //

And not with his head uncovered. // Vi_60.23 //

Having wiped his anus with a clod of earth or a brick, and having taken hold of his penis, he shall rise and perform śauca (purification) with water and earth that have been taken out, so as to remove the smell and the stain. // Vi_60.24 //

One lump of earth on the penis, three on the anus, likewise ten on one hand, / Seven are to be applied to both hands, and three on the feet. || Vi_60.25 ||

This is the śauca for householders, double for brahmacārīs, / Triple for forest-dwellers, and quadruple for ascetics. || Vi_60.26 ||
