The Splendor of Beauty

That Beauty which makes restless our desire, Which youth holds nurtured in its fancy's fire.

By which this fleeting world eternal seems, By which our youth becomes a tale of dreams.

It teaches us to turn our gaze within, And from the present world's distracting din.

By which perception's flaws are swept away, And reason learns emotion to obey.

Ah! Can that perfect Beauty e'er be found? O Lord, is this world's ring with that gem crowned?
