A Child's Prayer

My deepest longing comes to my lips as a prayer: O God, may my life be like a candle's flare.

May my life's spark dispel the darkness of the world, May my shining light in every place be unfurled.

May I become my homeland's grace and pride, Like a flower that adorns the garden-side.

O Lord, let my life be a moth's in its desire, To love the candle of knowledge, and draw ever nigher.

Let my life's work be to champion the poor, To love the weak, and those who sorrow endure.

My God! Protect me from all that is wrong, And guide me on the righteous path, where I belong.
