Chapter 63
Ancient Viṣṇu SanskritVishnu Smriti 63
Now, for the sake of security and prosperity, he shall go to the Lord (the king). // Vi_63.1 //
He shall not undertake a journey alone. // Vi_63.2 //
Not with unrighteous men. // Vi_63.3 //
Not with vṛṣalas (low-caste men). // Vi_63.4 //
Not with enemies. // Vi_63.5 //
Not very early in the morning. // Vi_63.6 //
Not very late in the evening. // Vi_63.7 //
Not at the twilights. // Vi_63.8 //
Not at midday. // Vi_63.9 //
Not when water is close at hand. // Vi_63.10 //
Not too quickly. // Vi_63.11 //
Not constantly with beasts of burden that are young, sick, or afflicted. // Vi_63.12 //
Not with those that have missing limbs. // Vi_63.13 //
Not with those that are wretched. // Vi_63.14 //
Not with cows. // Vi_63.15 //
Not with untamed animals. // Vi_63.16 //
Without having given fodder and water to his beasts of burden, he shall not relieve his own hunger and thirst. // Vi_63.17 //
He shall not stand at a crossroads. // Vi_63.18 //
Not at the root of a tree at night. // Vi_63.19 //
Not in a deserted house. // Vi_63.20 //
Not on grass. // Vi_63.21 //
Not in a place where animals are tied up. // Vi_63.22 //
Not on hair, husks, potsherds, bones, ashes, or embers. // Vi_63.23 //
Not on cotton seeds. // Vi_63.24 //
He shall circumambulate a crossroads. // Vi_63.25 //
And an image of a deity. // Vi_63.26 //
And well-known trees. // Vi_63.27 //
And a fire, a Brāhmaṇa, a courtesan, a full pitcher, a mirror, an umbrella, a banner, a flag, a Śrīvṛkṣa tree, a Vardhamāna vessel, and a Nandyāvarta symbol. // Vi_63.28 //
And a palm-leaf fan, a chowrie, a horse, an elephant, a goat, curd, milk, honey, and mustard seeds. // Vi_63.29 //
And a lute, sandalwood, a weapon, fresh cow-dung, a fruit, a flower, fresh vegetables, gorocanā (a bright yellow pigment), and sprouts of dūrvā grass. // Vi_63.30 //
And a turban, an ornament, a gem, gold, silver, a garment, a seat, a vehicle, and meat. // Vi_63.31 //
Having seen a water-jar, earth turned up by a plough, a single animal tied up, a maiden, and fish, he shall proceed. // Vi_63.32 //
Now, having seen an intoxicated person, a madman, or a person with a missing limb, he shall turn back. // Vi_63.33 //
And one who has vomited or purged, a shaven-headed man, a man with matted hair, and a dwarf. // Vi_63.34 //
And one wearing reddish-brown garments, a religious mendicant, and an unclean person. // Vi_63.35 //
And oil, molasses, dry cow-dung, fuel, grass, Palāśa leaves, ashes, and embers. // Vi_63.36 //
And salt, a eunuch, liquor, an impotent man, cotton, a rope, a fetter, and loose hair. // Vi_63.37 //
But a lute, sandalwood, fresh vegetables, a turban, an ornament, and a maiden, he shall welcome at the time of departure. // Vi_63.38 //
He shall not step on the shadow of a deity, a Brāhmaṇa, a preceptor, a tawny-colored animal, or an initiated person. // Vi_63.39 //
And not on spittle, vomit, blood, feces, urine, or water from a bath. // Vi_63.40 //
He shall not step over the rope to which a calf is tied. // Vi_63.41 //
When it is raining hard, he shall not run. // Vi_63.42 //
He shall not cross a river for no reason. // Vi_63.43 //
Not without having offered water to the gods and ancestors. // Vi_63.44 //
Not with his arms. // Vi_63.45 //
Not in a broken boat. // Vi_63.46 //
He shall not stand on the bank. // Vi_63.47 //
He shall not look into a well. // Vi_63.48 //
He shall not jump over it. // Vi_63.49 //
To an old man, one carrying a burden, a king, a Vedic graduate, a woman, a sick person, a bridegroom, and one in a chariot, / The path is to be given; but the king is to be honored among them, and the Vedic graduate by the king. || Vi_63.50 ||
