    Vishnu Smriti 47

    Now, the cāndrāyaṇa (the lunar penance). // Vi_47.1 //

    He shall eat mouthfuls of food of an unvarying size. // Vi_47.2 //

    He shall increase them as the moon waxes, and decrease them as it wanes; on the new moon day, he shall not eat. This is the cāndrāyaṇa of the "barley-middle" form. // Vi_47.3 //

    Or of the "ant-middle" form. // Vi_47.4 //

    That in which the new moon day is in the middle is the "ant-middle" form. // Vi_47.5 //

    That in which the full moon day is in the middle is the "barley-middle" form. // Vi_47.6 //

    He who eats eight mouthfuls every day for a month performs the yaticāndrāyaṇa (the ascetic's lunar penance). // Vi_47.7 //

    He who eats four mouthfuls in the evening and four in the morning performs the śiśucāndrāyaṇa (the child's lunar penance). // Vi_47.8 //

    He who eats in any way two hundred and forty mouthfuls in a month performs the sāmānyacāndrāyaṇa (the general lunar penance). // Vi_47.9 //

    This vow, O Earth, the seven spotless sages performed of old, / And attained the supreme state, as did Brahma and Rudra likewise. || Vi_47.10 ||
