    The Moon and the Stars

Fearing the break of day, The stars began to say To the moon: "The sights remain The same on heaven's plain; And we have tired of light, Of shining ever bright.

Our task is dusk till dawn to journey on, To journey, journey, ever on.

Each thing in this world is astir; What men call Stillness does not occur.

All are the thralls of this long quest: The star, the man, the tree, the stone—no rest.

Will this great journey ever cease? Will a destination meet our gaze?"

The moon replied, "O comrades of the sphere, O gleaners from the fields of night, now hear!

The life of this world is in Motion's sway; It is the old, eternal way.

The steed of Time runs, ever fleet, Stung by the lash of longing's beat.

To pause upon this path is but a flaw, For hidden in Stillness is death's own law.

Those who kept moving forged ahead; Those who but paused were crushed instead.

This motion's end is Beauty manifest; Its start is Passion, Beauty is its crest.
